The issue of importing skilled labor has been a major question in many developing countries. Almost everybody questions the issue of importing a given type of labor from any given country in the developed nations. This issue has risen due to the inability of most countries’ budget to be in a position to hire this labor and many countries end up being with lump sum debts which take years to be repaid.
This issue of hiring an imported labor has resulted to a lot of negativities in many developing nations. There have been issues of economy crush in some of these developing nations due to their inability to pay the labor which they imported. Again, even if the country will clear these debts, it takes a lot of times thus affecting the development of that nation. This is because the budget of the country focuses most on clearing those debts instead of being focused on the development.
Many courses for whose labor is being imported in the developing nations are neglected by students due to fear of lack of jobs. This is due to their given countries going for the option of importing labor from other parts of the world. The students in these nations opt to go for courses which, even in the eventuality of missing out on employment, they can easily employ themselves and be their own boss. This becomes the option for most students hence ending up with flooding these career markets with an influx of qualified persons.
Currently, the emphasis of some courses such as petroleum engineering has become an issue since you can’t convince students to take up career courses where after completion of the course they are not guaranteed of jobs. Again, it becomes even harder to convince a student to pursue a career in which the capability of one to be their own boss requires a lot.
Careers such as veterinary medicine is occupied by many people. This has resulted due to the ease of one getting employed in this field by both the government and the nongovernmental organizations. Still it is easy for one to be their own boss since it requires less capital and the only thing that is needed is the knowledge of handling animals.
According to many researches done about why companies opt to hire imported labor. It is seen that the local talent is deemed mediocre due to lack of practical experience and exposure to the real career world for the students pursuing such courses. In many developing countries, these courses are offered in very few universities with no college offering the same. A good example is in courses such as petroleum engineering. This is due to lack of emphasis by the government about these courses and its failure to equip both the universities and colleges with enough resources necessary for these courses.
This problem should be overcome by solving the issues of resources and exposure of students to the real word in these careers. They should also be made aware of the existence of the same. The government should equip its colleges and universities with the required resources for them to be in a position to offer these courses. This will help solve the issue of overspending of revenue on imported labor and instead focus on development projects.
